ESM 2014,Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

esm2014 01

July 2-6, 2014

The 14th biennial ESM was held in the historic Cambridge, MA July 2-6, 2014. The scientific presentation at this year’s conference and the keynotes by Dava Newman, Marian Hannan, Georg Duda and Paolo Bonato encompassed science from the cellular level to population science and from Earth to space! The art in science award presentations came from many different fields including diabetes, anthropology, geriatric, musical and clinical science.

This year’s conference was held over the American 4th of July Holiday.  The history of Cambridge was tied into each of our events and included the Harvard Museum of Natural History, Harvard Yard, the Longfellow House and much more!  While hurricane Arthur did its best to derail our plans on July 4th we made the best of the day which included World Cup soccer (fútbol) and an enjoyable (but wet) harbor cruise.

The conference concluded with a magnificent concert performance by pianist Henriette Gärtner, who in turn was also the art in science award winner for 2014. The scientific banquet was held at the Sheraton Commander conference site and attendees enjoyed contra music and dancing!

ESM 2014 was again a huge success and we look forward to the meeting in two years and the time we get to spend with our ESM friends and colleagues!

Australian user meeting 2013

pic02^

December 7, 2013

The meeting was held at the conclusion of the International Diabetes Federation World Congress (IDF) held in Melbourne, so we were extremely lucky to have Peter Seitz (CEO, novel) and Holger Neumann (product management, novel) in town. The day was well attended with approximately 30 Australian users present. Holger did a great job in the introduction (or reminding the crowd) of the principles of pressure measurement, and in collaboration with Peter went on to talk about what is new at novel and what the crew in Munich are working on. There were also some presentations from current users of the systems from around Australia, and on behalf of the rest of the audience would like to thank those people for volunteering their time to prepare a presentation. We spent the last part of the day asking questions of the experts from Munich, and getting up close and personal with the latest pressure measurement technology.

The view, the catering, the relaxed Aussie audience and the experts all combined to make a great day, and I received lots of positive feedback from those who attended. We plan to have another users meeting in 2014 as part of the Australasian Biomechanics Congress at the University of Wollongong.

DLDM 2013 Educational Workshop, Brazil

img dldm-webpage

August 3 - 4, 2013

For the first time an Educational Workshop on Dynamic Load Distribution Measurement (DLDM) was organized. The workshop took place in Natal (Brazil) - between the Footwear Biomechanics Symposium and the ISB Congress (3-4 August 2013). The event was jointly organized by Professor Isabel Sacco, Laboratorio Biomecânica do Movimento e Postura Humana da Faculdade de Medicina da USP, University of Sao Paulo (LABIMPH - USP), her team (Cristina Sartor, Alessandra Matias, Ricky Watari, Licia Cacciari) and Axel Kalpen from novel in Munich.

We were pleased to welcome more than 60 participants from South America, mostly from Brazil. The workshop was held in Portuguese and English.

The special highlights were the keynote lectures delivered by Matthew Nurse, Director, NIKE Sport Research Lab, Prof. Deyse Borges Koch, Laboratório de Biomecânica, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (UDESC) and Professor Dieter Rosenbaum, Director, Movement Analysis Lab, Institute of Experimental Musculoskeletal Medicine, University Hospital Münster who spoke about their long-term experiences in biomechanics research and their findings.

Axel Kalpen and Isabel Sacco & her team explained the sensor physics and biomechanics as well as the scientific software analysis of load distribution measurement and many various applications on the human body.

Besides the scientific part, the DLDM workshop provided opportunity for networking so that participants could talk to each other and make new contacts.
We were very pleased about the positive feedback.
Please also have a look at all impressions of the workshop!

ESM 2012, Aalborg, Denmark

esm2012 01

August 1 - 4, 2012

The Expert Scientific Meeting 2012 on dynamic load distribution of the human body, animals and technical contact surfaces was once again a suburb meeting with both wonderful intellectual and social interaction. The 13th biennial conference was held in Aalborg Denmark, hosted by Uwe Kersting at the Aalborg University and Aarhus University Hospital.

As usual the conference began with workshops held at Aalborg University, Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction (SMI). In the lab tours the participants received a wonderful insight into the very exciting research being performed there and also a revealing display of Patrick McLaughlin, as he so kindly volunteered to be a research subject! novel displayed many new features and advances in software and hardware. Beside keynotes, podium presentations and thematic poster sessions the art in science awards also were presented. ESM 2012 inclusive the networking and side trip day was again a great success and we hope to see everyone again!

ESM 2010, Providence, USA

esm2010 1

August 14-17, 2010

The 12th Expert Scientific Meeting provided once again a superb display of scientific discussion mixed with social interaction. Providence provided the perfect setting for the conference, with its rich history (Brown University), artistic display (Waterfire) and gracious host (Susan D’Andrea and the Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine). The conference was attended by a combination of new and old attendees which provided an ideal mixture for new friendships and collaborations to be formed. Some of the conference highlights included the Workshops at the CRRM, the RISD Museum of Art evening even including the most beautiful piano concert by one of the conference presenters, Henriette Gaertner, and a docent led tour displaying some impressive 19th, 20th and 21st century artists, and the Block Island activity day including a lobster feast at sunset. The final banquet provided good laughs and great music and an announcement for the next ESM, to be held in Brazil in 2011. Once again, ESM was a success!
